Usually the easy one
1 MB is where email attachments, job portals and most web forms draw their line, and it is generous enough that the majority of documents reach it without any quality being sacrificed at all.
That matters more than it sounds. Compression tools tend to treat every file the same way — re-render everything, hand back a picture of your document. But a PDF that only needs to lose a little weight can lose it losslessly, by rewriting its internal structure and dropping metadata it never needed. The text stays real text: sharp at any zoom, still selectable, still searchable by whoever receives it.
What gets you under 1 MB
- Almost any text document, including long ones with tables and charts.
- Ten to twenty scanned pages, typically with quality to spare.
- Presentations exported to PDF, which are usually bloated with embedded fonts and unused resources rather than genuine image data.
If your file is enormous
Files in the 50 MB and above range are almost always scans made at unnecessarily high resolution, or documents carrying full-resolution photographs that were never resized before being placed. Reaching 1 MB from there is possible, but it means discarding a great deal, and you may prefer to fix the cause instead: rescan at a lower DPI, or resize the images before rebuilding the document.
Why the file is never uploaded
Compression here happens through JavaScript running in your own browser, using your device's processor. There is no upload, no queue, and no copy of your file on a server anywhere. It is the same reason the tool has no file size limit and no signup — there is no infrastructure cost for us to recover, because your own computer is doing the work.

Questions people actually ask
Why did my file barely shrink?
Because it was already efficient. A PDF that is mostly text has very little redundancy left to remove — there is no hidden fat to trim. Tools that claim huge reductions on such files are usually re-rendering the pages as images, which makes the file smaller and the document worse.
Is 1 MB small enough to email?
Comfortably. Most mail providers accept attachments up to 20 MB or more; the tighter limits tend to be on web forms and portals rather than email. If you are emailing several documents, merge them first so the recipient gets one file.
Will the quality of my images drop?
Only if the lossless pass was not enough. When re-rendering is needed, photographs soften before text does — that is how JPEG compression behaves. At 1 MB this is rarely noticeable except on image-heavy documents.
Can I set a target larger than 1 MB?
Yes. Type any number of kilobytes into the field — 5120 for 5 MB, 10240 for 10 MB. The presets are just shortcuts to the numbers people ask for most.
Does this work in Chrome, Safari and Firefox?
Yes, in any modern browser on desktop or mobile. Older browsers without the required JavaScript features will show the file picker but fail to process, in which case updating the browser fixes it.
When is 1 MB the right target rather than a smaller one?
When the form allows it and the document carries photographs, colour scans or a lot of pages. At 1 MB most files clear the limit through the lossless route untouched, so you get the smaller file without paying for it in quality.
How many pages fit in 1 MB?
A text-only document can run to a hundred pages and still sit under 1 MB before you compress it at all. For scanned pages, five to ten at readable quality is typical, depending on whether they are colour or greyscale.
Does 1 MB mean 1000 KB or 1024 KB?
This tool treats 1 MB as 1024 KB, which is the conventional binary megabyte. Some upload portals count it as 1,000,000 bytes instead, so if a file that looks like it fits is rejected, set the target to 950 KB and try again.
