Choosing the right tool for the job

Several of these tools sound similar and do quite different things. Picking the wrong one is the most common reason people get a result they did not expect.

• Split, Extract or Remove? Splitting divides one document into several files. Extracting pulls chosen pages out into a new file and leaves the original alone. Removing deletes pages and returns the rest. All three get called “splitting” in everyday speech, and none of them costs you any quality — the page objects are copied, never re-encoded.
• Compress before or after merging? After. Twelve reports built from the same template each carry their own copy of the same fonts and logo. Merge first and a compressor can store those shared resources once; compress first and you keep all twelve copies.
• Protect or Unlock? Protect applies real AES encryption, so the file genuinely cannot be opened without the password. Unlock only works if you already know the password — it decrypts a file you have the key to. Neither tool can break into a document you are locked out of, and no honest tool can.
• Edit text or rebuild the document? PDF text does not reflow. Editing works well for a wrong date or a misspelled name; if you need to rewrite a paragraph and have the layout adjust around it, you want the original source document, not the PDF.
• Why won’t a scanned page convert to Word or translate? A scan is a photograph of a page. There is no text inside it to extract, convert or translate — only pixels that look like text to you.

What runs where

Every PDF tool on this page runs inside your own browser using JavaScript. Your file is opened, processed and saved on your own device, and at no point is it transmitted to us — you can confirm this yourself by opening your browser’s network tab while you use a tool, or by disconnecting from the internet after the page has loaded and watching the tools carry on working.

The practical consequences are worth knowing. There is no file size cap, because there is no upload. There is no queue and no wait. But the work is done by your device, so a two-hundred-page scan will be noticeably faster on a laptop than on an old phone, and a browser tab left in the background may be slowed down by the browser itself while it processes.
