Cutting a video is not the same operation as editing one, and the difference decides both how fast it is and how good it looks.
A video file is a container holding a compressed stream. Frames come in two kinds: keyframes, which hold a complete picture, and the far more numerous in-between frames, which only describe what changed since the last keyframe. That structure is why you cannot cut cleanly at an arbitrary moment without doing extra work — a clip that starts on an in-between frame has nothing to build the first picture from.
This is why an exported clip sometimes begins a fraction of a second before you asked. The cut is being pulled back to the nearest keyframe so the opening frame is complete. On most recordings keyframes land every two seconds or so, so the drift is small, but on heavily compressed footage it can be larger.
Crop after you have chosen the length, not before. It is much easier to judge whether the subject stays inside the frame once you can see the actual moment you are keeping.
Very large files are the main limit — a multi-gigabyte recording is more than a browser tab can comfortably hold, and those are better trimmed in a desktop editor first. Unusual codecs can also fail to decode, since the clipper depends on what your browser itself can play: if the video will not play in a normal browser tab, the clipper cannot read it either.
Unlike the PDF tools on this site, the clipper needs to send your video to a server in order to cut it. That is stated plainly in our privacy policy, and it is a reason to keep genuinely private footage off this tool.
