A signature photographed on paper is a rectangle of white with some ink in the middle. Drop that straight onto a contract, a letterhead or an online form and everyone sees the rectangle — a pale box sitting over the page, usually covering the line it was meant to sit on. The fix is not to crop it tighter. The fix is to remove the paper entirely so only the ink remains, and that is what this page does.
Why a JPG signature never looks right
JPG has no way to store transparency. Every pixel must be some colour, so the paper around your signature has to be something — and that something is white. It looks harmless against a white page until the document has a border, a coloured header, a watermark or a scanned background, at which point the box becomes obvious. PNG can mark pixels as see-through, which is why a proper signature file is always a PNG.
Photographing the signature so the cutout is clean
The AI separates ink from paper by contrast, so give it contrast to work with. Sign on plain white paper with a dark pen — a black or dark blue gel or fountain pen gives a much cleaner edge than a ballpoint that skips. Photograph it in daylight, from directly above, with no shadow of your hand or phone falling across the page. Lined paper, cream paper and receipt paper all make the job harder because the lines and tint compete with the ink.
If a stroke comes out thin or broken, it is almost always the pen or the light rather than the tool. Sign it again and photograph it again; that takes twenty seconds and beats repairing it afterwards.

If the form demands a small file
Government and university portals often cap the signature at a specific size — 20 KB, 50 KB, and so on. Do the background removal first and the compression second: compress the image to an exact KB once the paper is already gone. Compressing first and cutting afterwards leaves the edges rough, because the compression has already blurred the boundary the AI needs to find.
One honest caution
A transparent signature file is easy to copy. Send it only where it is genuinely needed, avoid emailing it around casually, and do not post it publicly. This is the same care you would take with a physical signature, and it matters more here because a PNG can be reused perfectly.
